Noodle Journey Episode 48: Marutai Hakata Soy Sauce Tonkotsu Ramen

Notes since filming:

And so it began. My love affair with Maruati ramen was sealed after my first bite of this. They’re such a consistent company, and I’ve loved everything I’ve tried of theirs. I learned during the ensuing marathon that I prefer all of their other more specialized tonkotsu flavors to this one, but this Hakata shoyu tonkotsu is still an eye-opening experience if you can find it.

We’re kicking off a 12 Days of Christmas extravaganza! Every day from now until Christmas, I’ll be reviewing one of Marutai’s 12 “Local Series” varieties. This stuff is supposed to be the best of the best but is still very easy to buy in the USA. First up is this Hakata style Soy Sauce Tonkotsu from Nagahama!

Noodle Journey Episode 47: Nissin Cup Noodle Original Flavor

Notes since filming:

It’s funny; even though I wasn’t super impressed by the flavor in this, there’s something compelling about it that makes me want to buy it every now and then. A little sprinkle of MSG and some Ramen Bae does wonders for this flavor.

Noodle Journey Episode 45: Itsuki Hakata Osshoi Tonkotsu Ramen

Notes since filming:

When someone on Reddit asks for a mild vegan noodle option, this is usually the first thing I think of. I can’t explain why some artificial tonkotsu flavors feel so wrong to my tastebuds, but this one was an incredible feat of food science. I still marvel at how good this tastes.

Since filming, Itsuki has started exporting this to the US in English packaging, calling it “Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen.”

Itsuki’s Yuzushio variety was pretty tasty, and so today we’re looking at their Hakata Osshoi Tonkotsu. This is a rich, milky tonkotsu with a big twist: it’s #vegan!
